And now both had choose to settle because Ted had what he wants and Robin is miserable an felt lonely. Worst thing ever!!! Barney becomes a better man thanks to his love for Robin, and Robin even lose her fear to commitment, they make each other better versions of themselves, yes, there was fear in both, but fear and doubts are part of life; and they take a leap of faith in their marriage; something Robin cannot do with Ted, somethint Ted cannot accomplish like a boyfriend because his obsession to get a relationship like the one between Marshal and Lily.
Also, the reason of the divorce between Robin and Barney was very silly, Robin's work make it difficult for both, but Robin could choose to become anchorhead again like she do it a the end, and they could had a good marriage, even when we see their discussion it was patheticaly unreal, what hotel in which an important corresponsal send by an important news network would stay, don't have access to Internet?!
They even said that they hate when Robin was far away, and that they hate to travel together in Robin's assignments, implying they like to be with each other when there is no assignments; in his development during the series Robin show how she was willingly to step aside of work for Don, why don't do it for Barney?
She still do it a the end and tells Ted about it. Its a bad ending, because they threw up all character development from Ted the one that change less than the others , Robin and Barney. I'm just gonna pretend like the alternative ending was the real ending. I will never, ever understand why they didn't go with this one. Honestly I never really felt that the ending was bad, it made sense.
It made sense if you followed all seasons except season 9 although they did put in some moments.. For me, it would have been way more fun if there would have been a Season 10 or that Season 9 would be completely different.
For example, Robin and Barney's wedding being the first 5 episodes but not more. We couldv'e seen Barney and Robin coping with divorce, Marshall and Lily's new place and some more time with their kids. Maybe some tragic moments in their lives passing of another parent and the return of fan-favorites.
The finale could be that the mother got sick and would eventually pass away preferably a double season finale with their wedding as well. That way it would've been more satisfying. In the end, the show has always told us that life isn't perfect and that's what they showed. The struggle is indeed real and that is what made the show as great as it was. Just because the ending wasn't perfect and Ted and the mother didn't last for a lifetime doesn't make it a terrible ending.
Altough I'm not a fan on how Robin's character changed the screaming at Patrice and the over-ego about her beauty were things I thought were really annoying to watch I still feel like she and Ted were working, because in the end, it is not the person similiar to us that our heart most desires, it is the person that completes us no matter how different.
Ending was objectively badly executed. They really needed to write the last 3 seasons or so very differently if they wanted to go with that ending. Also flesh it out, years of content were shoved in 2 episodes.
The mother deserved better, if she has to die then make it impactful and don't just shaft it etc. But all in all the ending was also unnecessary, even if it could have been OK if better executed its garbage as it stands.
The ending was so BAD though. I was bummed they didn't just make it a two-hour season-ender, so they would get to show certain parts [that were cut]. The table read for the finale was so good, so right, but it was also like 14 hours long.
So when I actually saw the final version of the show, I was like, 'They cut out everything! But, speaking of scenes that were cut, that leads us right into the next topic. Just as Alyson Hannigan noted , there were scenes that were cut, including a brief funeral scene for Tracy that would have made the process easier for fans. Some of the deleted scenes made it onto the Season 9 DVD, including an integral scene between Ted and Robin out for lunch and discussing the past and how Robin still had feelings for him.
Unfortunately, the funeral scene was never included in the DVD release. Either way, all of these additional scenes would have added a lot more nuance to the series finale.
It might have even made it clearer that Ted and Robin would eventually get back together. At the very least, it would have been nice to see pivotal character moments that would have added more depth to an already emotional ending and perhaps even provided some much-needed closure.
On the other hand, the sitcom did drop in quite a few clues that Ted and Tracy were probably not going to get the happy ending any of us imagined. In hindsight, that conversation was very revealing and telegraphed what the future would bring for Tracy. Ted was also holding the book in the scene where he first meets Tracy.
Liz Shannon Miller. As the show had promised since the very beginning of the series, the series finale finally showed Ted Josh Radnor meeting Tracy Cristin Milioti , the future mother of his children. For one thing, the terms are sometimes impossible to dictate, thanks to an abbreviated season, unexpected cancelation or lack of renewal. And even when the show has some sense of control over its ending or at the very least, a little bit of warning , it then has to measure up to fan expectations, which can be even more brutal than the critics.
Instead, what annoys me upon rewatching is the treatment received by the other half of the ensemble. The biggest crime the finale perpetrates is that it undercuts one of the major defenses fans of the show would use in support of weaker seasons — especially weaker seasons that drifted away from the original premise. However, thanks to several flash-forwards to the future, we know that they enjoy a relatively happy and prosperous life through middle age.
Until, that is, Barney has a daughter by a forever-unseen one night stand — being a father cures him of his lothario nature and maybe literally fixes him as a human being? My theory that she would be revealed as dead during the finale was actually the first thing I ever wrote for Indiewire, in an article which ran the morning of the series finale.
