Where Accurist watches either made there, or perhaps marked for sale in Japan? As mentioned, likely the Japan reference is to the quartz movement inside. Most modern Accurist watches are made in China as are the majority of high street brands. I have a lovely chronograph Accurist bought from H. Samual early 90's inscribed 'Made In Japan' that for me indicates it was watch and not just movement?
Always thought it interesting as not a Japanese manufacturer. So it looks like a branded 'Accurist' watch might indeed have been manufactured in Japan. I wonder if that means manufactured to the usual high standards in Japan, or simply assembled in accordance with Accurist drawings?
That is not to suggest that Japanese assembly is inferior, far from it. I am a big fan of Japanese manufacturing. Accurist founded at the end of WW2 used private label manufacturers from the outset, initially production was from Switzerland but in the early 's it was switched to Japan.
By the early 's Accurist was the UK's leading brand by value remarkably! A few years ago they were sold to the company who owns Sekonda, no idea where they are made now.
At the time, however, watches were still once in a lifetime purchases. The founder, Richard Loftus, created a range of fashion watches called the Old England range. These were quickly seen on the celebrities of the day — The Beatles , Twiggy and Princess Anne to name just a few.
These brightly coloured watches became synonymous with London, the mini skirt and Carnaby Street in the swinging sixties. During the s the introduction of the digital quartz movement happened. In , after research, Andrew Loftus switched the manufacturing base from Switzerland to Japan.
Accurist withdrew from the sponsorship in Accurist seized the opportunity to be formally associated with the Observatory, providing the new Atomic Clock. This officially records the time for the world. In Accurist provided the Old Royal Observatory at Greenwich with a Satellite controlled clock , to count down the last days of the 20th century to the Millennium.
The collection was stocked in over 1, outlets across the UK. They started to supply Versace watches and jewellery in and also co-featured in the advertising campaign of the English football team — the only watch company to have done so.
Accurist have an excellent account of their fantastic history on their website here. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. We are now working with a select customer base which is more manageable and gives us the opportunity of experimenting with new ideas in line with the on-going development of the brand. This is definitely an area that will continue to expand and we now feel we are in a better position to maximise this opportunity.
This strategy has already opened up opportunities with key multiple and independent retailers. Of course, new product needed to be developed and Accurist strengthened its design team, taking on an extra designer.
Long lead times from inherited suppliers meant it was vital to get the ball rolling as quickly as possible in order to have new product in stores ahead of the Christmas rush. We built on these ranges by developing and introducing new products that expanded all areas of the range including vintage and classic collections, however the main thrust of newness was concentrated towards contemporary designs. We had to move quickly because taking over at the end of March, some of the suppliers we inherited with Accurist have longer lead times, in some cases six months.
It was extremely important that we introduced new designs reflecting the newly relaunched brand prior to Christmas. From these early successes we continued to develop along these lines incorporating a contemporary feel. Generally the product was a very high specification but they had over recent years introduced some lower priced models, which we have now discontinued.
We want to ensure that we use the best materials but still offer extremely competitive price points. The second hand generally hits the markers, though can be prone to missing depending on the angle at which the watch is held. Fortunately, the majority of the quality control on display is rather good. The internal tachymeter lines up well with the dial below and the indices are consistently straight too, which I was not expecting.
The stock Amazon image showcases a creamy set of subdials and a similarly toned tachymeter, giving a vintage vibe. When combined with the domed mineral crystal, it all comes together into a smart, coherent and versatile reverse panda design that looks good with a variety of outfits. The solid link bracelet is also worth highlighting. Yes, I did just say solid link bracelet — Seiko are you listening? As a brand Accurist has always claimed to provide solid, reliable watches for low prices.
For those after a watch with a cool design that they can wear with a variety of clothes, I think this is a great choice for not much money. All Blog Posts.
